School of Law welcomes Study Abroad Programme students
In the academic year 2022/23 the School of Law has been delighted to welcome over 100 students from other Universities around the world to Leeds to study.
In September 2023 the School received a cohort of students from around the world who came to study with us for either one or two semesters. These students were introduced to the School through Induction Week (a week-long programme of activities, both academic and social, designed to help all new students settle into life at the University of Leeds).
I would say make sure to attend all events in the first week! Because later on it is more challenging to make connections. Pick subjects you find interesting and join a club - even something you haven’t done before!
The School of Law is an incredibly popular choice for students coming from overseas; we were ranked 90th for Law and Legal Studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2022, but it isn’t only the academic experience that draws students to Leeds.
Leeds is a buzzing, cosmopolitan city with a great nightlife culture. It sits in the heart of Yorkshire, in the north of England, just south of two beautiful National Parks (the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors), has excellent rail transport links to London and Edinburgh, and affordable flights to major European locations from Leeds Bradford airport. Leeds is also the largest legal and financial centre in England outside of London, with many law firms and companies which provide internships for students. The BBC, Channel 4, Financial Conduct Authority and the Bank of England also have offices here.
It can definitely be a challenge but the quality of the education and experiences gained from this destination and School are undoubtedly worth the effort.
When we asked this year’s incoming Study Abroad students what tips and advice they would give to any prospective students coming to Leeds, many of them pointed out the differences in the education system. In England our courses are split into modules, with each module typically having lectures and seminars, and there is more self-study and reading around the subject required than in other countries.
Compared to other countries, England focuses a lot on assignments and working at home, rather than just going to class and then memorising a book. Be prepared for that and split your time between lectures/studying and socialising.
While Study Abroad students are welcome to attend any student events organised by the School, we also put on events just for them, such as the ‘Meet and Eat’ held on 14 March 2023 which brought together students and staff to enjoy a free meal in the Liberty Building (the home of the School of Law).
Stay open-minded, put yourself out of comfort zone and try to make the most out of this year.
Through the Study Abroad Programme, students from countries including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and the US have become an integral part of the School community. In the past couple of weeks new students who are staying for the second semester of 2022/23 have arrived and the School is delighted to welcome them too.
