Professor Paul Wragg quoted in i news article on podcasts and the impact they can have on the justice system
The article is titled “Why podcasts such as Serial and The Teacher’s Pet are leaving the justice system reeling”.
School of Law expert in media law Professor Paul Wragg was quoted in the i news article which discusses the phenomenon of podcasts which review criminal trials, which in some cases has resulted in individuals being either set free or convicted.
Professor Wragg told the I that podcasts can help improve the justice system by highlighting its failings. Wragg points to Untold -- The Daniel Morgan Murder, a podcast which examined the multiple failings in police investigation that frustrated the hunt for Daniel Morgan’s killer(s). Professor Wragg says: "In cases like this, a podcast can generate political pressure for action to be taken.”
School of Law alumnus Dr Peter Coe (University of Birmingham) was also extensively quoted in the article, noting “A pillar of healthy functioning democracy is that the public should be able to see justice being done, we should be able to scrutinise the justice system and the integrity of trials and the decisions that come from those trials.”
