Generators4Ukraine fundraiser: LGBT+ film screening of "Queens of Joy"

Join us for this screening of the Ukrainian queer film “Queens of Joy” and raise money for sending generators to Ukrainian universities!

The Faculties of Environment and Social Sciences, along with support from PGR Pride, the LGBT+ Staff Network and The British Association for the Study of Ukraine, are delighted to be facilitating this fundraiser for Generators4Ukraine!

The film screening

To commemorate The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), which takes place annually in May, we are screening a charity fundraiser film screening of “Queens of Joy” (dir. Olga Gibelinda, 2025). The theme of the 2026 IDAHOBIT is “at the heart of democracy”.

The film is a documentary that tells the story of three queer Ukrainian people: Monroe (a trans woman and an important figure in the Ukrainian queer scene), Artur Ozerov (aka Aura, a drag artist who also works for Kyiv’s military administration), and Oleksandr Danilin (aka Marlene Scandal, a Ukrainian drag icon). During the ongoing war, they come together to organise a charity drag show in support of Ukraine, showing how art and culture can be a powerful mode of resistance and solidarity.

The film will be screened on Wednesday 6 May 2026 at 4pm in Clothworkers North LT (Cinema) (2.31). Book your tickets through the University Online Store!

Tickets start at £3 for students and £5 for colleagues. There are also opportunities to opt to donate further amounts at your discretion on booking your ticket. All money raised for this event will go to Generators4Ukraine.

The charity

The energy infrastructure of Ukraine suffers from regular targeted missile and drone attacks, which leads to power outages and critically affects the educational process. The lack of stable electricity makes it difficult to conduct classes and poses a health risk to students and university staff, especially during the cold autumn and winter months.

Within the framework of the Twinning initiative, Cormack Consultancy Group has launched a fundraising campaign Generators4Ukraine at the request of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The campaign aims to support the infrastructure of Ukrainian universities during power outages by providing them with generators and energy solutions.

Thanks to the contributions from British universities and private companies, a total of 22 Ukrainian universities have already been provided with energy solutions, but the campaign continues to cover the needs of more educational institutions.
