Profile

I am a full-time PhD student, working in the area of English applied linguistics. I also volunteer as the Postgraduate Representative of the Professional, Academic, and Work-Based Literacies Special Interest Group (PAWBL SIG) of the British Association of Applied Linguistics. I transitioned directly into my PhD programme following the completion of my undergraduate and taught postgraduate studies in the School of Education, University of Leeds. Alongside being a full-time student over the past five years, I have accumulated teaching and research experience locally and internationally in a range of contexts and fields including Higher Education (HE), Learning Development (LD), English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).

Research interests

My research is situated in the Higher Education context. In particular, I am interested in researching the language and academic literacy skills that L2 international students need for successful participation in their studies. I am interested in applying both qualitative (interviews, focus groups) and quantitative (text analysis, vocabulary testing) methodologies.

My research interests include:

  • Patchwriting (defined as “Copying from a source text and then deleting some words, altering grammatical structures, or plugging in one-for-one synonym-substitutes” [Howard, 1993, p.233])

  • Inappropriate source-use and plagiarism

  • Writing development

  • Academic vocabulary

  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogy and curriculum

  • Educational Gain in Higher Education
