Profile
I received a BA and an MA from the Ohio State University, and my PhD in English applied linguistics from the University of Birmingham. Before coming to Leeds, I worked in Hong Kong and Sweden.
Research interests
My research is situated within the broad area of educational linguistics. Within that area, my research investigates aspects related to English-medium instruction (EMI), English for academic purposes (EAP) and academic vocabulary. My work on EAP includes research on intertextuality, source use and plagiarism in academic writing. More recently I have also begun investigating the phenomenon of predatory research outlets. I’m the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of English-Medium Instruction (together with Hans Malmström).
