Leeds alumnus named as finalist for the 2026 NISAU India‑UK Achievers Honours

Leeds alumnus, Bikrama Keshari Mohaptra is a 2026 India‑UK Achievers Honours finalist, recognising his lifelong commitment to disability inclusion and global impact.

We are delighted to share the nomination of School of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) alumnus, Bikrama Keshari Mohaptra (MA Disability and Global Development, 2012) as a finalist for the 2026 NISAU India‑UK Achievers Honours, one of the most prestigious recognitions for Indian alumni of UK universities. The Honours celebrate outstanding Indian graduates who use their UK education to create meaningful societal impact, recognised in partnership with the UK Government, British Council, and UK higher education sector.

The awards are part of NISAU’s annual programme, which highlights the achievements of Indian graduates shaping international policy, innovation, culture, and public life. Finalists form part of the Achievers Class of 2026, announced at the UK Parliament and celebrated at a gala ceremony in London.

Why Leeds?

Reflecting on his journey to Leeds, Bikrama shared that his motivation was rooted in lived experience:

While working as a rehabilitation professional in India, I realized that disability is often treated as a separate issue, rather than integrated into mainstream development… The MA in Disability and Global Development at the University of Leeds was exactly what I needed. It not only deepened my understanding of disability rights and inclusive development… but also strengthened my English, communication, and research skills.

The programme equipped him with the tools to turn passion into policy. It set the foundation for an international career that has included drafting disability certification guidelines for the Maldives, shaping the disability programme of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan and advising UNICEF Palestine on disability inclusion strategies.

Leading change across borders

Bikrama’s post‑Leeds career reflects the global leadership celebrated by the NISAU Honours:

After completing my studies at Leeds, my career trajectory transformed… supporting governments and international organizations, including drafting disability certification guidelines in the Maldives and advising UNICEF.

Looking ahead, he plans to return to Odisha, India to contribute to state-level disability inclusion policies and programs, guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

Strengthening the "living bridge"

Being selected as a finalist for the NISAU India‑UK Achievers Honours holds deep personal significance for Bikrama:

Being recognized with the India UK Achievers Honours is a deeply meaningful lifetime achievement… This international recognition is a proud milestone in my lifelong dedication to making a difference for people with disabilities.

The Honours recognise leaders who strengthen the "living bridge" between India and the UK; something that aligns closely with Bikrama’s international work and commitment to community transformation.

A message to future Leeds students

Bikrama’s advice is simple but powerful:

Leeds is one of the best places in the UK to explore education… I encourage students to take full advantage of professors, libraries, and all available facilities – even during holidays.

His reminder that opportunity often comes from persistence embodies the spirit of the Achievers programme:

Never give up and never lose hope… If I could study in the UK at the age of 45 and build an international career… anyone can do it.
