Meet our current scholars
We asked the 2025/26 Grandall Scholars Ivo Portugal Cuomo from Bolivia and Haoyu Wu from China, who are both studying for an LLM in International Business Law, about how their first semester at Leeds is going, what experiences they’re enjoying outside the classroom, and any words of advice they’d give to someone considering applying for the 2026/27 Grandall Scholarship.
Ivo told us, “this has been a life-changing opportunity for me and I would not have been able to begin this new academic chapter in the UK without this generous support.”
Until this year, I had never been outside my home country. For this reason, the warm, friendly, and supportive atmosphere at the University has been especially meaningful to me, making me feel welcomed from the very beginning.
Both our Scholars are also enjoying the teaching at Leeds, with Haoyu noting: “Our teachers help us understand not only “what something is” but also “why it is so”. The classroom is not merely a space for transmitting knowledge; it is also an environment that stimulates independent learning.”
I am already impressed by the University’s teaching structure which combines lectures and seminars in a workshop format that encourages discussion and critical thinking.
Outside the classroom
There are many other opportunities for the Scholars to take advantage of outside the classroom. Ivo told us: “I have been engaging in conferences, career fairs and other academic events that help me understand the professional opportunities available in Leeds and to expand my knowledge in up-to-date issues of Law.”
In addition, living in Leeds has been fulfilling as I share a house with other students from different cultural backgrounds and like exercising in the city’s parks, exploring its neighbourhoods, staying in touch with my loved ones back home and watching football. Recently, I even attended a Manchester City match which was unforgettable.
