The Centre for Research in Digital Education (CRDE) and the Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence are happy to host Professor Jason Lodge from the University of Queensland, Australia, to address AI-enabled assessment models. Professor Lodge in the first speaker in the CRDE 2026 Seminar Series.

Abstract

Generative AI has decoupled student effort from academic output, necessitating a fundamental shift from product-based to process-oriented assessment. Grounded in the science of self-regulated learning, this session explores how to validate human cognitive agency in increasingly automated environments. We can design assessment models that prioritise evaluative judgement and metacognition over synthetic output. This approach ensures that education remains a driver of deep learning, preparing students for a future where agency is the primary marker of capability.
