Dr Sam Lewis

Profile

I am a graduate of the Universities of Aberystwyth (BSc (Econ) (Hons) Law and Politics) and Bristol (LLM, PhD), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I held research associate posts at the Universities of Bristol and Swansea before joining Leeds as a lecturer in 2004. I was an RCUK Research Fellow at Leeds between 2006 and 2012.

I have led or been co-investigator on projects funded by the Home Office, the N8 Policing Research Partnership (PRP), the Nuffield Foundation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and local criminal justice organisations.        

From 2013 - 2018 I managed Masters programmes in criminal justice, criminology and criminal law at Leeds. I am now the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor and sit on the School’s Senior Management Team. I am also the Grade 9 representative on the Faculty Research and Innovation Committee (FRIC).

Research interests

I have been engaged in collaborative research with practitioners, policy makers and service users for almost 25 years. In the last decade, my work has focused on violence against women and girls (VAWG), including a Home Office-funded study of the geospatial and contextual patterns of rural domestic abuse, in collaboration with Cumbria Constabulary, and research on child-to-parent violence (CPV) funded by the N8 Policing Research Partnership.  I was also the University of Leeds academic lead for a White Rose Consortium project concerned with domestic abuse and marginalised communities. 

My interests in minority ethnic experiences of criminal justice stem from work on a Home Office-funded study of Black and Asian Men on Probation, which led to an edited collection. My latest work on race, crime and criminal justice concerned Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) charging decisions, with Dr Jose Pina-Sanchez.
