Research interests
Whilst a PhD student in Bristol, I also acted as an Advocate for young people detained in a Local Authority Secure Children's Home. The experience of working alongside young people to ensure that their rights were respected and their voices heard has shaped much of my work since.
My research is primarily concerned with the governance of risk and the regulation of 'problematic' individuals and groups. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, I worked on Home Office-funded research projects on The Resettlement of Short-Term Prisoners and The Experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Men on Probation. As a researcher at the University of Swansea, I acted as co-investigator on a study of Irish Experiences of the Criminal Justice System in England. Whilst an RCUK Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, I was co-investigator on a Nuffield-funded study of The Use of Anti-Social Behaviour Interventions with Young People. Since 2014 I have acted as Principal Investigator (with Amanda Holt) on a national study of Conceptualisations of and Responses to Child-to-Parent Violence (CPV) in England and Wales. I have also examined (with Michael Thomson) the emergence of The Social Body in the life and social sciences, as neuroscience and epigenetics have highlighted the impact of the social environment on the soma (body). This work has examined the incursion of these new social biologies into early years policy with children and families. It has also considered their implications for theory, with a particular focus on the new corporeal humanisms.
I have been a member of the Ministry of Justice's Race Advisory Group since 2011.
