An exploration of a transgender man's journey through pregnancy and birth
Professor Sally Hines has contributed to The Guardian's recent exploration entitled 'The story of one man's pregnancy'
In the article, The Guardian interviews Jason Barker, who documented the process of becoming pregnant and giving birth while living legally as a male, and turned it into a film entitled 'A Deal with the Universe', which is set to premiere at BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Monday 26 March.
Professor Hines commented on the increasingly common nature of transgender men choosing to go through pregnancy and birth in order to have children of their own. She said, "In the UK, if you look at how many people are accessing blogs and online forums and support groups, asking about healthcare because they are pregnant, or young guys thinking about the future … There is lots of anecdotal evidence that more people are doing it. When something becomes visible, more people think it’s possible.”
Professor Hines is principal investigator on the project 'Pregnant Men: An International Exploration of Trans Male Experiences and Practices of Reproduction'. It is a 3-year international project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
