Francis K. Poitier

Profile

I am a Bahamian postgraduate researcher with a focus on gender and health in Small Island Developing States. My PhD project uses an intersectionality approach to examine the persistence of obesity in The Bahamas as a case study. 

I obtained a Masters of Science in International Health from the University of Leeds in 2016 with research that focused on exploring mother and child health policies in Nigeria. I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Richmond in 2014. I am a United World College scholar and previously worked for the Ministry of Health of The Bahamas.

I am supervised by Dr Bassey Ebenso and Dr Reinhard Huss in the Faculty of Medicine and Dr Jorg Wiegratz in the School of Politics and International Studies.

Research interests

I am interested in global health, international development and student affairs. My previous experience include employing qualitative research methodologies to examine health policies in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) and working in rural and island contexts.
