Research interests
My ESRC funded PhD explored the relationships between communications technology, crime and regulation historically, focusing mainly on the social incoroporation of the electric telegraph, how the technology facilitated crime, and mechanisms used to regulate it. Much of the focus was on the role of the Post Office as a regulator in this context, and more broadly the role of the institition in regulating its staff. The research revealed a long history of the Post Office (and other organisations and instititions) operating as a site of private justice and considered the implications of this in relation to the effectiveness of regulatory responses, but also raised questions about the role of organisations such as the Post Office as a site of private justice (including connections to the Horizon scandal). More broadly, my research interests concern the role of instititons and organisations as regulators of their staff, and their interactions with the criminal justice process. I am therefore concerned with private policing, private prosecution, and organisational cultures, in both a contemporary and historical sense, specifically expanding the boundaries of research to more effectively accomodate private systems of punishment and policing. Other areas of interest include schools, and the law and criminal justice process and young people. I am also interested in crime and technology.
