Book launch: "Collective Action and Civil Society: Disability Advocacy in EU Decision-Making"

As part of the School Research Seminar Series, the Centre for Disability Studies (CDS) will host a hybrid launch event for a new book by SSP Lecturer Dr Claudia Coveney.

The Centre for Disability Studies book launch of Collective Action and Civil Society: Disability Advocacy in EU Decision-Making by Dr Claudia Coveney will be hosted by the School of Sociology and Social Policy, with discussants Dr Tom Campbell and Emeritus Professor Mark Priestley. 
 
For in-person attendance the launch will be held in 12.21/12.25 in the Social Sciences Building. There is also an option to join remotely via Microsoft Teams.
 
Abstract
Changing structures of governance in recent decades have created unique roles for civil society organisations as decision-making actors. In this book, I explore the barriers and opportunities created in these changes for social movements through a case study of disabled people’s collective action campaigning within EU governance. Through the lens of disability advocacy, I examine the relationship between civil society organizations (CSOs), social movements, and EU governance: how certain organisations come to represent social movements within governance, and the resulting impact on policy and decision-making. The changing landscape of influence, opportunity, and the evolving role of community groups hold consequence for the future of collective action and social change.
