Professor Michalis Kontopodis became the Chair in Global Childhood and Youth Studies in the School of Education, University of Leeds in 2018. Before moving to the University of Leeds, he held the following academic positions:
• 2016-2018: Senior Lecturer, University of Sheffield, UK
• 2014-2016: Senior Lecturer, Roehampton University London, UK
• 2013-2014: Assistant Professor, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands
• 2011-2012: Post-Doc Researcher, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
• 2007-2010: Post-Doc Researcher, Humboldt University Berlin, Germany
Professor Kontopodis has an extensive range of publications embracing seven (7) languages. His most recent book publication is in Japanese: 新自由主義教育からの脱出 ー 子ども 若者の発達をみんなでつくる (an updated 2023 edition of ‘Neoliberalism, Pedagogy and Human Development’). He is the Founding Editor of the Peter Lang Book Series “(Post-) Critical Global Childhood & Youth Studies”.

Professor Kontopodis has served as an expert advisor for the UNESCO Chairs programme, of the Global Challenges Research Fund (UK), and of Horizon Europe. He has held visiting positions in Escuela Normal del Estado in Mexico, at Jawaharlal Nehru University in India and at Pontíficia Universidade Católica de São Paulo and has been an external advisor for research projects funded by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (National Council of Scientific and Technological Development) in Brazil. Research interests

Professor Michalis Kontopodis is internationally recognised for his multidisciplinary research on co-designing children’s and young people’s global futures, with emphasis on participatory methods, psychological development and well-being, (post-) digital education, children’s health and eco-pedagogies.

Professor Kontopodis established and led for three years the ICY: Inclusion, Childhood & Youth Research Centre in the School of Education as an interdisciplinary network bringing together colleagues from multiple Schools and Faculties. He has played a key role in promoting close collaboration between ICY and other research centres in Leeds and from the Yorkshire and Northern region, such as the Centre for Disability Studies, the Centre for Applied Education Research in Bradford and the N8 Research Partnership.
