Dr Nasir Mahmood, PhD, FHEA

Profile

Before Joining as a Teaching Fellow in the School of Education, University of Leeds, I have taught as an Associate Lecturer, GTA and as a guest lecturer in both post 1992 and Russel Groups universities. My previous teaching engagement has been varied, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. I have taught courses on Sociology, Politics, Social Policy and Education programmes both at undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught level, this also includes module leadership and dissertation supervisions. Previously, I have been involved in module and programme refocussing  in terms of embedding EDI & Decolonisation Perspectives. 

Also, before doing my PhD at the University of Leeds (2013-2017), I worked in schools. In my previous Secondary school teaching roles in the UK (for more than 8 years in Sheffield schools 2005-2013), including working as an EAL leader, I contributed to the progress and achievement of the ethnic minority students, devised strategies and prepared scaffolded resources to make the curriculum accessible for culturally diverse classrooms. I supported and liaised with parents and external services (Ed psych, Youth services etc) regarding pupils’ well-being and progress. I have also worked in the informal HE community setting where I have worked with local community Empowerment organizations on outreach impact initiatives, Colleges, Charities and Refugees Councils in following aspirational trajectories for the marginalized groups from BAME background.

I was awarded an ESRC +3 scholarship to do my PhD in School of Education at Leeds (2013-2016). Grant No: 1367259. My PhD thesis focussed on understanding the life histories of British Pakistani Muslim teachers from misrecognition perspective about their current and changing position of identities and belonging  against the socio-historical backdrop of the post -immmigration frame and the contemporary socio-political millieu of the ‘War on Terror’ in the UK’s educational and social contexts. My MA dissertation was about Security, Place, policy and belonging: ‘A critique of multiculturalism in England's contemporary education policy & practice: preventing violent extremism and multicultural tensions’ (University of Sheffield, 2010-2011).

Research interests

My theoretical interests are in misrecognition, counter narrative, critical race, critical multiculturalism and de/postcolonial theories. I have also an ongoing engagement in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning around Decolonization of Curriculum and pedagogies, research with the BAME early career teachers and International Students in Higher Education Settings.I have examined and supervised critical research PGT/UGT projects pertaining to Discourses of Race, Ethnicity and Nationalism in Educational/Social Policy & Practice; Socio-cultural Perspectives on Childhood Learning and Development, Provoked Digital Literacy and intercultural communication, Nationalism, Multiculturalism and Educational Policy & Practice.

I have engaged with Narrative ethnography, Positioning and Rhetorical Discourse, Urban and Spatial Ethnography, Place based and Mobile methods, Co-production, Policy analysis, Emergence, Provocation and Projection based Memory eliciting approaches, Critical introductory quantitative approaches.
