Dr Edd Aspbury-Miyanishi

Profile

I was an English language teacher in the UK and in Europe and then an academic skills teacher at several UK universities. After 16+ years I decided to come back to university to do an MA TESOL at Manchester which I enjoyed so much, I stayed on for a PhD. Now, I now teach here at Leeds in the TESOL department

Research interests

My research focuses on teacher psychology and behaviour, exploring questions like why teachers do the things they do in their practice? What do we mean by expertise? How does teaching practice change? and how can we develop teaching practices in real-life teaching contexts? I have developed a new approach to understanding teaching practice and teaching skill by incorporating insights from ecological psychology, enactivism and phenomenology into current perspectives on teaching practice such as practical knowledge and teacher noticing.

I am also interested in a range of applied linguistics topics like phonology and theories of language acqusition as well as topics like AI in assessment.
