Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m from a little village by the sea in Cornwall and I came straight to Leeds after finishing my undergrad elsewhere, studying BA Society, Culture and Media.
What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?
When I was researching different masters courses I came across this one and just thought it sounded really up my street, included a lot of topics that I’m passionate about and I could see myself wanting to work in this area. I chose Leeds because I had never been before and had heard great things from my friends who did their undergraduate studies here.
What is it that makes you passionate about your area of study?
I’m passionate about my area of study because it explains things that are so often overlooked in everyday life or that perhaps aren’t thought about deeply enough day to day. I’m passionate about people and about helping people and this area of study facilitates that.
What do you think of your course so far – what aspects of the course have you enjoyed the most or are looking forward to the most?
I’m really enjoying my course so far; I’ve especially enjoyed the group discussions in seminars as you get to here so many opinions you hadn’t thought of before, specifically one on how neoliberalism allowed for inequalities during COVID.
What would you say about the learning facilities at the University of Leeds?
I think the learning facilities are really great, there’s lots of support and guidance if you need it. I’m particularly a fan of the libraries because there’s so much space and everything you could need is there, which is perfect for when you’re fed up of working from home.
How would you describe the student support and community at Leeds? Have you taken part in any co-curricular or social events you would like to mention?
I think Leeds has a fantastic community, there are so many social events; such as gigs and open mic nights that are loads of fun, and really friendly.
What other activities are available for students to take part in outside of their studies, and which ones have you tried out yourself?
There are hundreds of great clubs and societies at Leeds, I’m part of Sociology and Social Policy society, but there is so much choice that you will definitely find something you’re interested in.
What do you think about Leeds as a city?
I love Leeds as a city. It’s so different to anywhere I’ve lived before and I thought I would be really overwhelmed with how big and busy it is, but I have already found all my favourite spots for food, walks, etc.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?
I would say to people applying to do my course that it’s good to be passionate about the topics, so don’t feel embarrassed to share your opinion!
What do you plan to do once you’ve finished your course? What are you career aspirations?
I don’t currently have any plans for after I’ve finished my course, but I would like to work in something like an NGO focussed around sustainable and equal urban planning.
