Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I am an international student from China and my undergraduate degree is in Law, which I am very passionate about. I have also obtained the Chinese Legal Professional Qualification. And I am planning to become a lawyer.
What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?
The University of Leeds has some of the best teaching facilities in the world, and my teachers have a wealth of academic research in the field of intellectual property law. All of this has attracted me to the University of Leeds Law School to enhance my academic research and provide me with a good foundation for my future career path.
What is it that makes you passionate about your area of study?
Along with the development of new technologies and the integration of the world economy, intellectual property rights have a very important role to play in international trade and national economic and technological development. China's intellectual property (IP) law system started later than that of the United States and Europe. There is a great need for IP lawyers with an international perspective in Chinese law firms, and I am also very passionate about IP law.
What do you think of your course so far – what aspects of the course have you enjoyed the most or are looking forward to the most?
I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Leeds. Whenever I had a problem and asked a teacher a question, they were very helpful. There were also additional dissertation writing training sessions at the law school. Through these classes I also learned how to produce a quality dissertation and gained a lot of writing skills. The tasks assigned by the teachers have also taught me how to find relevant literature and think critically. This has given me a better understanding of professional knowledge.
What would you say about the learning facilities at the University of Leeds?
I really like the school and campus which has a lot of libraries. Whenever I need a change of environment to study, I can always find a quiet place in the library to study. In addition, the library is very well stocked with specialist books, which makes it very convenient for me to find literature.
How would you describe the student support and community at Leeds?
We have a student representative in our major who listens to our students' opinions on our major courses and helps us to bring them to the attention of the teachers, and we get feedback very quickly. I think the student representative is a great position.
What other activities are available for students to take part in outside of their studies, and which ones have you tried out yourself?
We have professionally organised a meet and greet. We shared food, drinks and met some teachers in a small restaurant. It was a very pleasant memory.
What do you think about Leeds as a city?
Leeds is a great city to live in because of Leeds railway station and the ease of access to every part of the UK from Leeds. In addition, Leeds has many shopping malls, which is very good for students who like to shop. It is a safe and calm place to live and I love Leeds.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?
Worth coming here to learn.
What do you plan to do once you’ve finished your course? What are you career aspirations?
I would like to return to China to work as an IP lawyer. Because intellectual property law will be taken more and more seriously in China. The number of IPR litigation practices in China should increase to a great extent in future legal proceedings. So I think this is a promising career path.
