Dr Shirley Tate quoted in article about racism on campus

Dr Tate is quoted about her response to the claim that black scholars still experience racism on campus.

The article which featured in the Times Higher Education, discusses the racist mindset that black scholars are still viewed as outsiders at universities.

This was fuelled by a recent talk given at University College London entitled “Why Isn’t My Professor Black?”. The talk relived that just 85 of the UK’s 18,500 professors are black, and only 17 are black women.

Dr Tate is in agreement about the existence of a “mindset that views black academics as ‘out of place’ ”. She continues on to say that were often excluded from academic networks crucial for advancement and struggled to find mentors because black academics were seen as “outsiders”.
