Research Culture Seminar: Ann Phoenix - Masculinities in New Times

We are delighted to welcome to the University of Leeds Ann Phoenix, Professor of Psychosocial Studies at UCL, to deliver the first of this semester's Research Culture seminars.

This talk entitled, 'Masculinities in New Times: Intersectionality, Racialisation and Hegemonic Masculinities in 11-14 year olds in Helsinki schools', discusses findings from a small-scale study of boys and masculinities in Helsinki schools. The study aims to throw some light on how boys are living, and thinking about, masculinities in changing times in contemporary Helsinki. The empirical work focused on discussing with boys (in groups and individually) issues including  what they like to do in school and out of school, their friendships and relationships with boys and girls, including brothers and sisters, their future visions for themselves and their engagement with schoolwork. In this talk I will consider the ways in which boys performatively co-construct intersectional narratives of gender, including hegemonic masculinities. The analyses engages with the ways in which space and generation are explicitly part of imaginaries of masculinities and ethnicity implicitly so.
