CALL FOR PAPERS: The Bauman Institute Annual Student Workshop on Social and Critical Theory

The Bauman Institute invites PGT and PGR students to submit an abstract for a short paper (2000-3000 words) or PowerPoint presentation for its Annual Student Workshop in Social and Critical Theory.

Submissions are asked to relate to this year’s theme, which is ‘Future Cities, Future Citizenship’. Students with an interest in social and critical theory from all disciplines and fields across the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to submit.

The event welcomes theory-driven abstracts relating, for example, to alternative politics, new forms of community, cosmopolitanism, identity, individualism, mobilisations, new collectivisms, and the everyday. The theme seeks to explore contemporary critiques of capitalism and the nation state, alongside potentialities of alternative urban lifeforms and politics, amidst the crisis of contemporary democracy, neoliberal economics and the environment. These are all themes developed by researchers within the range of work at Bauman Institute. Read further examples.

The workshop will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 25 May. It will take the form of two or three chaired panels, organised thematically. Panellists will have an opportunity to speak about their work before a broader discussion will open, linking the panel papers and inviting questions from the audience. Should there be participants not selected to present they will be invited to take on the role of discussants.

Abstracts should be submitted to Claudia Coveney (SSP) C.h.coveney@leeds.ac.uk by Friday 30 April. Submissions should be no longer than 250 words.
