Research interests

I’m interested in applying realist evaluation and realist synthesis to the evaluation of healthcare policy and practice.  I was part of the NIHR funded RAMESES II project team that developed reporting standards and training materials for carrying out realist evaluations.  I have carried out several NIHR funded realist syntheses and a realist evaluation.  Current NIHR funded projects include a realist synthesis of how partnering interventions support quality improvement in healthcare led by Dr Ross Millar at the University of Birmingham (NIHR127430) and 'QualDash' which aims to design and evaluate an interactive dashboard to support the use of national clinical audit data improve quality of care, led by Professor Rebecca Randell, University of Bradford (HS&DR 16/04/06).  I am also involved in a three year project funded by the Nuffield Foundation to review the evidence underpinning youth justice interventions, led by Professor Steve Case, University of Loughborough.

Another strand of my research has focused on the design and evaluation of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and explored their application and use within routine clinical practice.  I am interested in how patients complete and make sense of PROMs and how clinicians use PROMs to support patient care.  I'm especially interested in how PROMs and other data/measurement technologies shape and are shaped by interactions between clinicians and patients. Most recently, this has included an NIHR funded realist synthesis of PROMs feedback to support quality improvement and individual patient care.  Previously, I carried out an ESRC funded study exploring how neurorehabilitation teams used outcome measures in clinical decision making.

I am President Elect of the International Society for Quality of Life Research, having served on their board of directors between 2009 and 2012.  I co-chaired the 2018 ISOQOL international conference held 24-27th October in Dublin.
