Dr Claudia Radiven

Profile

I joined the University of Leeds in 2009 to complete my undergraduate degree in Middle Eastern Studies and MA by research in the School of Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (AIMES).

My PhD was completed in 2022, and supervised between the School of Sociology & Social Policy (SSP) and AIMES titled “Preventing Citizenship: Islamophobia, Countering Violent Extremism and the case of the Prevent Policy in the UK”. This research investigates the Prevent policy, the training to carry out the now incumbent duty, and the impact of its implementation on the Muslim community. This is achieved through analyzing the policy document and associated literature using decolonial discourse theory.

I worked in SSP as a teaching assistant from 2015 to 2020. In November 2020 I joined SSP as a Teaching Fellow and in 2021 was appointed as a lecturer during the School’s Diamond Jubilee.

I teach primarily on topics such as race, decoloniality, crime and social policy. My current research focuses on the Prevent policy, colonial racial governance and Islamophobia.

Responsibilities

  • Programme Manager for BSc Social Policy, Sociology & Crime
  • Exec for the Centre of Ethnicity and Racism Studies

Research interests

My research interests include Critical Muslim Studies, decoloniality, counter-terror and de-radicalisation, Islamophobia, racism, and State Crimes.

In 2021 I published the collected edition “Crimes of States and Powerful Elites: A collection of case studies” with my colleague Dr Simon Prideaux.

I have also contributed to the The Diverse and Average Student (DASE) Research project which is a scholarship project seeking to understand what makes students feel belonging in the University and what hinders this. My contributions focussed on whiteness within the university setting.

Student education

I teach on a wide variety of modules across both undergraduate and postgraduate study. In SSP these include topics that focus on crime, race and social policy.

I am particularly interested in teaching about crimes from above and disrupting the narratives that focus on street crime/crimes from below only.

I have also taught in the School of Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern studies on modules that focus on radicalisation/de-radicalisation, Islamic theology and philosophy, and Islamophobia.

For Leeds for Life I have delivered sessions on subjects focussing on religion and violence.
