Dr Joseph Hall
I joined the School of Sociology and Social Policy in April 2018 as Research Fellow to work on the ESRC-funded project Living Gender in Diverse Times with Professor Sally Hines, Dr Kim Allen, Dr Sharon Elley and Dr Karen Cuthbert. This interdisciplinary research explores young people’s understandings, experiences and practices of gender in contemporary UK as this intersects with sexualities, class, race and age in spaces of families, intimate relationships, peer groups, schools, employment, leisure, media, and online.
Previous appointments include Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Northampton on an international and interdisciplinary ESRC-funded project (Re)Connect the Nexus: Young Brazilians’ experiences of and learning about food-water-energy (with universities of Birmingham, Leicester, and UNESP Guaratingueta, SP, Brazil) and Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Hull on a Spencer Foundation funded project Radical Inclusivity/Exclusivity: Reconsidering ‘exclusive’ schools and their role within ‘inclusive’ education. This international and interdisciplinary project involved fieldwork in the UK and U.S. and provides new insights into schools that educate LGBTQ children as part of ‘separate’ provision.
I have also been employed as a temporary Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Brighton where I taught at first, second and third year undergraduate level (including conveying an optional third year module Geographies of Genders, Sexes and Sexualities). I also supervised undergraduate dissertations, assisted with local and overseas fieldtrips, and carried out independant research.
I am currently Assistant Editor for the Children's Geographies journal (Taylor & Francis of Routledge).
Research interests include geographical explorations of:
- Children, childhood and youth
- Gender and sexualities (including intersections with other social identities)
- Education (particularly ‘inclusive education’) and schooling
My ESRC Open Competition doctoral research explored The Formation, Implementation and Reception of Gender and Sexualities Education in English Primary Schools (University of Hull) and post-doctoral research at the universities of Hull, Northampton and Leeds have extended these research interests to include young people, gender and sexual identities, ‘exclusive’ schools and 'inclusive education', youth settings, environmental education, and the food-water-energy nexus.
I have single and co- authored publications in Social & Cultural Geography, International Journal of Inclusive Education and a book chapter in Youth Sexualities: Public Feelings and Contempory Cultural Politics.<h4>Research projects</h4> <p>Any research projects I'm currently working on will be listed below.
