Meryl du Plessis will present on the legal frameworks surrounding accessibility for disabled persons in South Africa.

In this joint Centre for Law and Social Justice and Centre for Disabilities seminar, two visiting scholars will present papers and invite discussion on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in their respective countries.

South Africa’s implementation of the CRPD:  Progress and challenges

In this paper I’ll consider South Africa’s implementation of the CRPD, which it ratified in 2007.  I’ll examine the impact of the absence of domestication of the CRPD and the ways in which the treaty may still permeate South Africa’s domestic laws.  I will also examine and evaluate legislative amendments that have sought to achieve compliance with the CRPD, as well as the extent to which the CRPD has influenced domestic case law. 

About the speaker

Meryl du Plessis is a senior lecturer in the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.  Her research interests are in labour and social security law, with a particular focus on access to work for disabled persons, as well as social security for women and low-income workers in the informal economy.
