This research seminar will give an overview of some challenges faced in conducting qualitative and community-based research with minority communities.

This research seminar will give an overview of some challenges faced in conducting qualitative and community-based research with minority communities. I will discuss my role as co-investigator on a Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded study entitled “Creating Our Families: A pilot study of the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people accessing assisted human reproduction services in Ontario” (FRN-103595). The study was aimed at interviewing LGBTQ people about their experiences with fertility clinics across the province of Ontario, with participants selected using purposeful sampling to represent both socio-demographic diversity and a range of clinical experiences. I will talk about a variety of challenges the study presented including the creation of consent forms and interview strategies for people who are intentionally committing crimes (i.e. gay men using commercial surrogates), as well as the difficulties and rewards of collaborating with an advisory committee of LGBTQ parenting educators, LGBTQ service users and AHR service providers throughout the project.

About the Speaker

Stu Marvel a Lecturer in Law at the University of Leeds and Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. I also hold an appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Emory University. I am affiliated with the Centre for Law & Social Justice at Leeds, where I co-founded a research hub on Vulnerability Theory with collaborative ties to the Law and Vulnerabilities Network at the University of Lund in Sweden, and the Vulnerability and Human Condition Initiative at Emory University.
