Bio
Davina Cooper is a research Professor in Law and Political Theory at King's College London and the author of several books, most recently Everyday Utopias: The Conceptual Life of Promising Spaces, also published by Duke University Press. She is an interdisciplinary scholar, whose work focuses on concepts, transformative politics, experimental communities and state activism.
Abstract
What socio-political interventions do different accounts of gender’s form make available? This talk develops an account of gender that combines institutional, performative, and relational features, and that situates gender in relation to other inequalities, through the figure of the economy. It explores economy’s contribution to conceptualising differently institutionalised gender networks in ways that foreground relations of production, value, and use. And it explores one formal intervention that might lance the strength of the dominant gender-economy regime: decertification. For some, the withdrawal of the state from determining, recording, and requiring orderly sex/ gender statuses is an overdue revision; for others, it is a redundant gesture that fails to confront the gender inequalities that continue to be manufactured. This talk explores both perspectives to consider the effects that are imagined as following the informalisation of gender’s production.
