Adult Learner Award Win for Law Student

Rebecca Richardson has won an Adult Learner Award following nomination by Lecturer and Personal Tutor, Dr David Pearce

University of Leeds Law student Rebecca Richardson has won an Adult Learner Award following nomination by Lecturer and Personal Tutor, Dr David Pearce, in recognition of her efforts and achievements during her degree course in English Law with American Legal Studies.

For various reasons, Rebecca’s attendance at school was very poor from age 13 and she left at 16 with extremely limited prospects.

After experiencing some very harrowing times, Rebecca decided to turn her life around at 20. She sought help for her problems and, following her marriage in 2004, began studying for her A-levels.

Despite giving birth to her two children during this period, she did sufficiently well to gain a place to study here at Leeds. Rebecca’s academic career has been characterised by not only excellent academic results but also a devotion to helping others through her voluntary work. We are proud to name her as the University’s 2010 Adult Learner Award Winner.

This is the fifth year the awards have been held.  Two awards were created for 2005-6 as a way of recognising the achievements of students who have entered University through non-traditional routes, more specifically those who have entered the University through an Access Programme (such as the Access to Leeds scheme or Foundation courses) and mature students.

It is hoped that the awards will offer inspiration to other potential access programme participants/adult learners.
