Security Heritage Hub Events

Our events

Three public engagement events will take place at London Metropolitan Archives in June and July 2022, shining a light on security heritage. Each event will draw from LMA’s collection, in particular the archives of Chubb and Son, lock and safe manufacturers. There will be a book group, an afternoon of films and an opportunity to view archival material first hand. The events are open to the public and free of charge.

Wednesday 8 June – Security in Print: Goldfinger by Ian Fleming

Online
6–7.30pm
In June LMA’s monthly Book Group will explore ideas relating to security in Ian Fleming’s iconic James Bond novel Goldfinger. Goldfinger, published in 1959, is the seventh Bond novel. Its plot centres on Bond’s investigation into the gold smuggling activities of Auric Goldfinger and a heist on Fort Knox. A presentation of material from the Chubb archive, along with material relating to the gold trade from LMA’s wider collection, will complement the discussion.

Wednesday 22 June – Security on Screen: films from the Chubb collection

At London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, London EC1R 0HB
2.30–4pm
The Chubb company, synonymous with locks, was an early adopter of film for promoting its products. Through documentary footage of strong rooms, advertisements invoking fear of burglary, and investigations into armoured cash-carrying vans, this event shows how film shaped the public’s awareness of security issues across the twentieth century.

Friday 8 July – Security on Show: graphic material from the Chubb collection

At London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, London EC1R 0HB
10.30am–12.30pm and 2–4pm
Security is built into today’s world. Locks, alarms, grilles, cameras and private guards are so familiar as to be unremarkable. Explore these features of everyday life by looking at material from the rich and varied Chubb collection. Drawings, photographs, promotional leaflets and scrapbooks illuminate how security products have been made, bought and sold for around 200 years and how they have changed how we think about crime, fire and living with risk. The event will begin with a short introduction and there will be opportunity for discussion.
