First Waves: Exploring the Impact of Race Relations Legislation in the UK Launch

The launch of a new exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Race Relations Act, commissioned by the House of Commons and curated by artist Scarlett Crawford.

First Waves: Exploring the Impact of Race Relations Legislation in the UK is commissioned by The Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art, House of Commons. To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Race Relations Act, the House of Commons has appointed artist Scarlett Crawford to lead a UK-wide project to capture the voices of the people it most affected. The project is designed for communities across the country to come together to share their memories of life in the UK over the past 50 years and to celebrate the people in their communities who have made a difference. Participants will also discuss how this, and later Acts of Parliament, impacted on their lives.

Participants have worked together with Scarlett to create a new exhibition, which will be displayed in the Information Hub in October 2018 and in the Houses of Parliament in February 2019.

These exhibitions will display art works made during the workshops and will be free to attend.

The Exhibition Launch will see the works go on display here at the Project Space in the School of Fine Art, HIstory of Art and Cultural Studies in the University of Leeds.

More details of the Launch - including precise timings which may vary from the above - will be available shortly.
