Profile

Having worked as a Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes at the Language Centre at the University of Leeds, I recently joined the School of Education as a Teaching Fellow in TESOL. I obtained my PhD from the University of Leeds, School of Education in 2019. My PhD thesis is entitled: The experiences and personality development of Russian-speaking migrant pupils in English primary schools. Funder: School of Education International Research Scholarship, University of Leeds. Before undertaking my PhD, I worked for three years as an English and Russian Languages Instructor in Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages. From September 2018 until June 2019 I was a Research Assistant for the project: ‘Fostering Effective Parent-practitioner Partnerships in Character Education’ PI: Dr Shirley-Anne Paul. Funder: Leeds Social Sciences Impact Acceleration Account in association with the ESRC, School of Education, University of Leeds. 

My PhD thesis was awarded the Early Career Publishing Prize which supports authors to publish an open access monograph.

Research interests

My research is focussed on the experiences and personality development of migrant language learners in a context of immersion (submersion) with a special interest in language learning motivation and social behaviour and relationships post-migration.

I am also engaged in a collaborative multi-method arts-informed research into creativity in EAP 18-months project. Creative inquiry in EAP is an arts-informed project setting out to investigate EAP practitioners’ creative voice, conceptualisation of creativity in EAP and how it contributes to students’ and teachers’ agency during COVID-19. We are particularly interested in emergent ways creativity is used in EAP classes and how COVID-19 affected EAP teachers’ creativity and how it is being changed. We aim to address the following research question: How do EAP practitioners express and facilitate creative voice in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic? Through a mixed method arts-informed research approach we hope to develop a framework of creative inquiry in EAP. The project involves three phases (semi-structured interviews using creative arts-informed techniques, an online survey, and an online open access drama workshop). The project was awarded the Pedagogic Research in the Arts (PRiA) seedcorn funding 2021.
