Dr Yen Dang will host this workshop exploring the concept of lexical coverage.
Abstract:
Reading and listening materials for second language (L2) learners should match their vocabulary level to support comprehension and create opportunities to acquire new vocabulary while developing language skills. In this practical workshop, I will draw on findings from L2 vocabulary research to demonstrate how corpus tools can be used to evaluate the vocabulary load in reading and listening materials. This analysis can inform decisions about vocabulary learning goals and guide the design of materials and activities. We will explore the concept of lexical coverage, its impact on comprehension, and the value of corpus-based word lists in enhancing comprehension. Participants will engage in hands-on practice using corpus tools to analyse lexical coverage and identify academic vocabulary in texts. We will also discuss how these insights can inform material adaptation and activity design to support learners’ vocabulary development. For demonstration, I will draw on my research on academic spoken vocabulary for supporting academic listening. These steps can be applied to a wide range of texts and learning contexts.
Workshop length: 1.5 hours
Practical note: Please bring a laptop or tablet to the workshop so you can take part in the hands-on activities. We will send you the workshop handout ahead of time. So please bring this document with you.
Workshop capacity: 30 max
Participants: This in-person workshop is most relevant to those working with learners studying English for Academic Purposes (EAP). However, anyone with an interest in developing language tools to design language teaching/learning materials are all welcome. No prior knowledge of corpus linguistics is required.
