School of Sociology and Social Policy Research Seminar: Northern Exposure: multi-racial Wakefield and voices from the White margins

Abstract: Northern Exposure: Race, Nation and Disaffection in "Ordinary" Towns and Cities after Brexit has been a large scale ESRC project based in the School of Sociology and Social Policy at Leeds, investigating the sources and narratives of Britain's current political crisis before and after Brexit, in the context of long term social and demographic change. We conducted interviews and ethnographic fieldwork in inner city, peripheral and peri-urban suburbs across the North, in four famous post-industrial locations, Preston, Halifax, Wakefield and Middlesbrough. 

In this introduction to the project, we will focus on the district of Wakefield, and in particular fieldwork conducted in relatively deprived areas of the district identified with marginal White English populations. We are very pleased to be joined by Paul Hayes, Senior Research Office at Wakefield District Council, who has been a central part of the impact-based research of the team.
