British Council Scholarships for English Language Teachers in India 2022

How to apply

Deadline for applications 17:00 (UK time) 1 May 2022

Stage 1

  • Applicants MUST first apply for the MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages to be eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applications without these will be rejected. We strongly recommend applying for the course as soon as possible and ideally at least 3 weeks before the scholarship application deadline.
  • These awards are only available to taught Masters applicants who are liable to pay academic fees at the International fee rate.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must have Standard XII English at 70% or above for CBSE / CISCE / West Bengal exam boards (all other exam boards must be minimum 75%) or meet the English language requirement for the course through a recognised English language qualification by 1 May 2022.

Stage 2

Please note that, due to the large volume of applications, the Postgraduate Scholarships Office will not enter into any correspondence regarding the progress of an application until the outcome is known.

How are the scholarships awarded?

A Scholarship Committee, composed of academic reviewers, programme leads and the International Office will select a shortlist of Scholarship candidates to send to the British Council for review and final selection.

What will the scholarship cover?

This is a full scholarship which will cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Maintenance stipend for living expenses in the UK at £1,133 per month for the duration of the course
  • Flights and connecting travel to Leeds
  • Visa costs and healthcare surcharge
  • IELTS exam costs (if required)
  • Additional study expenses (Covid-19 tests and dissertation printing)

Eligibility Criteria:

In addition to acceptance onto the MA programme, scholars are required to meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered for this scholarship. Applicants must:

  • be a passport holder and permanent resident of India
  • demonstrate the case for financial support / socio-economic need through a written statement on the application form
  • not be in receipt of financial support or funding towards their study programme in the UK from any other source
  • have not previously studied at degree level or higher in the UK or lived recently in the UK (i.e. in the last three years)
  • be motivated and academically able to follow and benefit from a UK postgraduate taught course
  • be working in or directly with the government education sector in India, with a focus on English language teaching
  • be active in the field with a proven interest in the proposed subject area of English language teaching and educational technologies
  • be willing to demonstrate future contribution to the field of English language teaching in India through the benefits achieved after graduating from UK higher education
  • agree to be a part of the British Council’s global alumni network, maintain contact with the British Council and act as an ambassador for the UK and engage with activities as part of a Scholarships for English Language Teachers alumnus during and after your studies in the UK
  • demonstrate a plan and a passion to engage with the wider community working in English language teaching from India through a written statement
  • agree to their personal data being shared with the British Council as a condition of applying for the bursary.

Scholars are not eligible for a British Council Scholarship for English language teachers if they:

  • hold dual British citizenship
  • are an employee, a former employee, or relative (*) of an employee of Her Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies/High Commissions; the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; Department for International Trade; the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office)
  • are an employee, a former employee, or relative (*) of an employee of the British Council

(*): Relatives are defined as parents or step-parents, siblings or step-siblings, children or step-children,spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner (where the couple have been in a relationship akin to marriage orcivil partnership for at least two years).

Successful applicants will form a network across the four Universities participating in this Scholarship scheme and will benefit from ongoing engagement with the British Council and each other to support theteaching and learning of young people in India, during and after completing the MA programme.
